Nickel 201 is a modification of 200, manufactured to control carbon content (.02 max) that avoids being embrittled by intergranular precipitation at temperatures of 600° F to 1400° F. Alloy 200 Plate is usually limited to serve at temperatures below 600° F.
The carbon content becomes critical when operating temperatures are expected to exceed 600° F. If the temperatures exceed 600 degrees F, the lower carbon content of Nickel 201 makes the material resistant to graphitization and hence less subject to embrittlement. Nickel 200 operates at up to 600° F while Nickel 201 operates up to 1230° F.
